From my short daily experience in Tokyo I learned that then you come to a shop you need to know exactly what Japanese size you are, because usually this is the only size that you will see on the cloths and shoes. For example, when we wanted to buy a men's shirt in one of biggest suits stores in Tokyo, and didn't know the exact Japanese size, the store clerk took the measures from my husband and converted the size by herself, but then we opened the shirt at home, and my husband tried it on it didn't fit. If you are a woman with continental shoe size of 39, like me, or a man with continental shoe size of 43, like my husband, you will probably be disappointed even in big department stores, because the possibility of finding good and beautiful shoe during a sale will be very hard. Most cheap shoes in Japan are made in China and that means that even the LL (largest size available) will be small for you.
