Malaysia products in Harrods London

The day may come in the not-too-distant future when London’s iconic department store might be selling Malaysia’s traditional herbal Viagra, or its famed teh tarik.

Themed “Malaysian Craft at its Best,” the event will be Harrods’ biggest promotion of Malaysian arts and craft. It will be held from the third week of February until the end of March.

Malaysian celebrity shoe designer Datuk Jimmy Choo and international fashion designer Datuk Bernard Chandran are expected to join a host of British VIPs at the glitzy reception.

Twelve top models from Malaysia and London will also take part in a batik fashion show featuring the latest designs from internationally-renowned Malaysian batik designers.

A live batik painting demonstration will be held in the window display, which will be adorned with about 100 specially-designed batik lanterns.

Asean Travel Forum in Vietnam

Vietnam will host the 28th ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF) in Hanoi from January 5-12, 2011. The theme of the forum “ASEAN Tourism – Striving for a New Height” aims to boost the ASEAN tourism industry and promote ASEAN as a single tourism destination at a time of fierce global competition.

During ATF 2011, there will be dialogues between ASEAN Tourism Ministers, the ATF Travel Exchange (TRAVEX), travel seminars and exhibitions.

Vietnam is expected to welcome nearly 1,500 foreign visitors for ATF 2011 with 400 travel agencies from potential markets such as North America, West and East Europe, North-east Asia and Australia.

Year 2011 will be the last year for ASEAN to achieve full integration as the region moves closer to becoming the ASEAN Economic Community. The ASEAN tourism industry has made significant contributions to the integration process by strengthening exchanges and consolidating peace in the region.

Bukit Fraser, Malaysia

The tranquillity, the fresh and cool mountain air and the verdant foliage has made the hill station of Bukit Fraser (Fraser's Hill) a favourite destination for nature lovers.

Located 105 km north of Kuala Lumpur and sitting at 1,524 metres above sea level, the hill station is a haven for bird watchers as it is the transitional rendezvous for migratory birds flying south to New Zealand and Australia between March and June every year, to escape from the harsh winter of Siberia.

Fraser's Hill ranks 23rd as the venue for the world's bird watching event and is on the top four list of locations for international bird race meets in Asia, coming after China, Thailand and Indonesia.

TARANTULAS

Other than migratory birds, Fraser's Hill is also host to large and hairy tropical spiders called tarantulas (theraphosidae).These arachnids face the threat of extinction, due to the general lack of concern for their survival, compounded by the callous act of either catching or mortifying them for sale as souvenirs.

Their nests are difficult to find, as they are located on mountainous terrain. These insects can grow up to 15 cm long and their bite is rather painful and poisonous. The tarantulas in Frasers Hill are mostly over 40 years old. Male tarantulas usually die after reaching sexual maturity at the age of five years.

However the female of the species have a longer life span and would lay eggs once a year, after the rainy season. The tarantula has a unique 'dual-tone' feature where the four front legs appear to have a golden tint while the four rear ones are dark blue in colour.

Bali Cultural Fiesta

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is scheduled to officially kick off the 30th Bali Cultural Fiesta (PKB) on June 14, 2011.

The head of state to be accompanied by a number of ministers will watch cultural attractions involving thousands of artists from Bali as well as other regions. The organizing committee invited 12 foreign ambassadors to the inaugural ceremony of the annual cultural fiesta.

The invited ambassadors will include those from the United States of America, Japan, Singapore, India, South Korea, Thailand, Britain, and Malaysia. During his stay in Bali, the President would also open the first Bali Cultural Congress and watch a colossal classical dance-drama created by the Denpasar-based Indonesian Arts Institute (ISI), he said.

This year`s theme of the cultural fiesta is "Self-Control Towards Balance and Harmony. The event will involve arts troupes from nine districts and one city of Bali, five arts groups from other provinces, and several arts groups from the 12 invited countries.

MTV Asia Award in Malaysia

The MTV Asia Awards 2011, touted as the region's biggest pan-regional awards show, is heading to Malaysia for the first time. The MTV Asia Awards, now in its sixth edition, has previously been held in Singapore (thrice) and Bangkok (twice).

This time around, it is Malaysia’s turn to play host to the parade of international and regional music talents, scheduled to attend and perform at the show. Sponsored by edc by Esprit, Tourism Malaysia and Genting – City of Entertainment, and Xpax, the MTV Asia Awards 2011, which will be broadcast to over 291 million homes across the region, will be held at the Arena of Stars, Genting Highlands, on Aug 2.

Hosting the award ceremony in Malaysia will be Jared Leto, singer with US rock band 30 Seconds To Mars and who also happens to be a successful Hollywood actor with hit films like Panic Room, Fight Club, Requiem For A Dream and Lord Of War.

The 20th Yogyakarta Arts Festival 2011 will be held July 6 - August 3

Nine kampongs (villages) will take part in the so-called `babad kampung` (chronicle of village) program. The nine kampongs are Tukangan, Kricak Kidul, Pandean, Samirono, Mergangsan Kidul, Suryowijayan, Minggiran, Dolahan and Pajeksan.

The festival would make kampongs as the focus of the festival as it has always been identical with a dirty and old fashioned object. Such condition could be changed with the reposition of the kampongs as productive and creative part of the city.

In the program, the art performance could function as a media in the form of contemporary and traditional arts.The most important thing is how a kampong`s society understand the meaning of its past and how they think of their identities.

8th Forber CEO Conference in Singapore

This year's conference, to be held in Singapore for the second year running, brings together more than 400 “heroes of capitalism” to discuss key global issues of the day.

Singapore has confirmed high-profile speakers including ArcelorMittal president and chief executive officer (CEO) Lakshmi N. Mittal, actor and One Foundation, China founder Jet Li and Sybase USA chairman and CEO John Chen.

The Malaysian speakers include Tune Group, Malaysia chairman Datuk Tony Fernandes and YTL Corp Bhd managing director Tan Sri Francis Yeoh.

Attendance to the conference, to be held from Sept 8 to 10 in Sentosa, is exclusive and limited to chairmen, CEOs and presidents of corporations at a US$8,000 fee.

The conference has been held in Asia since 2001. In the last eight years, it has travelled to Hong Kong, Shanghai, Singapore and Sydney.

9th Forbes Global CEO Conference in Malaysia

Business magazine publisher Forbes will be holding its ninth Forbes Global CEO Conference in Kuala Lumpur next year.

Under an agreement signed , the Malaysian Government will be the “host sponsor” of the event, which will take place in late September or early October.

It is the first time that the high-profile event will be staged in Malaysia.

Suitability impressed with Malaysia, which is not only an attractive destination for foreign investments, but a conducive place to work and live in. This will also increase the appreciation of Malaysia as an ideal business location.

The theme for the 2011 conference in Kuala Lumpur was yet to be decided.
