Baba and Nyonya in Melaka

In melaka, there is a race from Chinese that have been living here for a long time, they are Baba and Nyonya community..

Peranakan, Baba-Nyonya and Straits Chinese are terms used for the descendants of the very early Chinese immigrants to the Nusantara region, including both the British Straits Settlements of Malaya and the Dutch-controlled island of Java among other places, who have partially adopted Malay customs in an effort (chronological adaptation) to be assimilated into the local communities.

Baba House Museum in Melaka, Malaysia, an area where many Peranakan Straits Chinese lived. The word Peranakan is also used to describe Chinese Indonesians. In both Malay and Indonesian, 'Peranakan' means 'descendants'. Babas refer to the male descendants and the Nyonyas the female. The word nyonya (also commonly spelled nonya) may originate from the Portuguese word dona, which means 'lady'.

Most Peranakan are of Hoklo (Hokkien) ancestry, although a fair denomination of them are of the Teochew or Cantonese descent. Originally, the Peranakan were part Chinese, part Malay and part descended from the (non-Malay) original inhabitants of Singapore Island. Written records from the 19th and early 20th centuries show that Peranakan men usually took brides from within the local Peranakan community. Peranakan families also frequently imported brides from China and sent their daughters to China to find husbands. A small group of Indian Peranakans, known as the Chitty, does exist as well. Another similar group of Eurasian Peranakans also exist as Kristang people.

Budget airline can now fly Kuala Lumpur-Singapore route

Finally, AirAsia has given the green light to fly on Kuala Lumpur - Singapore route. Personally I am surprised with this new. It looks like our government has become more open on competition. I am referring to Malaysia Airline and Singapore Airline. Definitely, after this there will be stiff competitions between these airline.

Well, I see it as good new for us as the customer. We have more choice to choose. We have more power in bargaining. It is the airline turn to please us. It is learned that AirAsia is given 2 daily flight each on non-peak hour. Tiger Airways, Singapore budget airline will also be offered the same route.

Both airlines are expected to start this route by January 2011.

Bako National Park, Sarawak

Sarawak first national park, Bako National Park (Taman Negara Bako) which is gazetted in 1957 offers some of the best chances to see native animals in the wild. Located on a peninsula at the mouth of the Sarawak River, Bako’s relatively small area of 30 sq km (10 sq miles) is uniquely rich in both flora and fauna, offering examples of almost every vegetation group to be found in the state. Primary rainforest covers one side of the peninsula, while the other side offers a picturesque coastline of steep cliffs and sandy bays with beaches for swimming. Mud flats and sand bars support a great diversity of sea birds, as well as peculiar red crabs and mud skippers.

While it is possible to visit Bako on a day trip, the rewards are greater if you stay for one night at least - a visit of two or three nights is recommended. Some people stay for a month, relaxing in the natural environment and exploring all the park has to offer. Catch the sun setting over the coloured limestone karsts of the main beach, and enjoy the unearthly experience of walking in the luminous forest at night.

The dry plateau is home to the bizarre insect-eating flowers known as nepenthes or pitcher plants; eight species exist within the park’s confines. The coastal swamp forest is a favoured retreat of Borneo’s endemic proboscis, or long-nosed, monkey, the long-tailed macaque, bearded pig and sambar deer, some of which find their way down to the beaches. Within the park is a good system of well-marked paths; ask for a guide map at the Park Ranger’s Office. Settle down and get ready to explore the wonders of Bako.

A magnificent plankwalk leads through a tidal mangrove forest that changes character throughout the day with the rise and fall of the sun, and the ebb and flow of the tide. Here in the early morning, when the water is low, lucky visitors may encounter the shy proboscis monkey or the silver leaf monkey, feasting on the young leaves. Tread quietly and keep your eyes wide open. The popular Lintang Trail leads through nearly all the vegetation types and up to the arid plateau where pitcher plants can be found at the scrub.

Within the park, accommodation is available at the resthouse, dormitories and chalets at the headquarters at Teluk Assam. A small shop supplies basic provisions which you can cook yourself, or the canteen offers a perfectly acceptable menu. Beware the cheeky long-tailed macaques who will try their best to find their way into your chalet kitchen or even steal food right off the table in the main dining area. They are a basketball of trouble, providing staff in Kuching at the Visitors’ Information Centre, close to Sarawak Museum.

Redang - Paradise Island

Redang Island, locally known as Pulau Redang or just "Redang" is one of the largest islands off the east coast of Malaysia. It is a popular holiday island for Malaysians, most of whom come on package deals to one of the resorts. Redang is one of nine islands, which form a marine park, and which offer snorkeling and diving opportunities.

The island is also an important conservation site for sea turtles. Previously, the indiscriminate economic exploitation of turtle eggs had caused fewer turtles returning to nest on the island. The waters around Pulau Redang also contain two historic shipwrecks. H.M.S Prince of Wales and H.M.S Repulse were sunk here at the start of World War II, setting the stage for the Japanese occupation of Malaya.

The Pulau Redang archipelago comprises Pulau Redang, Pulau Lima, Pulau Paku Besar, Pulau Paku Kecil, Pulau Kerengga Kecil, Pulau Kerengga Besar, Pulau Ekor Tebu, Pulau Ling and Pulau Pinang. Pulau Redang is the biggest of all the islands in the Marine Park, measuring about 7 km long and 6 km wide. It's highest peak is Bukit Besar at 359 metres above sea level. The boundary of the Pulau Redang Marine Park is established by a line linking all points 2 nautical miles from the shores of Pulau Redang, Pulau Lima, Pulau Ekor Tebu and Pulau Pinang.

The other nearby islands of Pulau Perhentian Besar, Pulau Perhentian Kecil, Pulau Lang Tengah, Pulau Kapas and Pulau Susu Dara are also gazetted and protected as Marine Parks. Today, only the bigger islands like Redang, Lang Tengah, Perhentian and Kapas have resort facilities for visitors.

Best Time to Visit
Best Time To VisitBetween March and October. Take note that most resorts are closed during the North-east Monsoon, which blows from November to February

How to Get There

No matter which way you choose to arrive, a marine park fee (RM5) is levied on all visitors to the island. Transfers can be arranged directly with resorts.

By plane
Berjaya Air has recently opened an airstrip on Redang (code RDN), located on the north side of the island near the Berjaya Redang Beach Resort. As of July 2005, there is one daily flight each to and from Kuala Lumpur (RM249 one-way) and Singapore (RM350 one-way). Tha airport is connected by roads to both of Berjaya's own resorts and to the southern fishing port, however transfers from the airport to anywhere else will require a combined car & ferry ride that must be arranged in advance.

By boat
The traditional way to get to Redang is by boat. The main jetty is at Merang, some 30 km north from Kuala Terengganu. From Merang, the trip to Pasir Panjang takes about 40 minutes on comfortable, large speedboats and prices are more or less standardized at RM40/80 one-way/return.

Be careful ! Take care yourself..

I read this shocking news from the star online about a woman who was murdered at one of budget hotel here in Kuala Lumpur. The motive is still unknown. Police rule out the motive as robbery as all his personal belongings are still intact.

A hotel staff member who rushed to the third-floor room when receive call from the victim and found the guest sprawled on a blood-soaked bed, with slash wounds on her chest and neck.

She was found stabbed three times on her chest and slashed once on her neck. The alleged intruder, believed to be a Myanmar national, then escaped.
I urge all our guests to take a good care of yourself and belongings. It is unfortunate that this has happened. I'm sure the police has already start working on this case at this very moment..
