Shin Ramen

Picture from Nongshim Ramen.

Min Young brought some ramen for me when she visited Malaysia, Shin Ramen products. But I couldn't eat it as I found there is 돈지(돼지고기) in the ingredient. I know what is 돼지고기 dwaejigogi - pork, but I don't know what is 돈지. So, I brought all the ramen and gave it to Yong Soo when we studied Korean. He told me that 돈지 is pork bone. I asked him whether I could eat Korean ramen at all and he said I'd better not as he is pretty sure that all type of ramen in Korea has traces of pork in it. Check the ingredient list here.

Picture from Nongshim Ramen

This is Bibimmyon. Like bibimbap but bap/밥 is rice and 면/myon is instant noodle. 비비다 / bibida means mix or rub together. So, naturally 비빔면 means mixed instant noodle. ^^ This one also has traces of pork in the seasoning/sauce although it is not stated in the web as in here but I found it behind the packaging.

Just fyi, if you could read the ingredient list, it stated 팜유(말레이시아산), 팜유 / pamyoo means palm oil and 말레이시아 / Malleisia is Malaysia. I guess 말레이시아산 means 말레이시아산업개발청 - Malaysia Industrial Development Authority?

Thailand's Best Party Beaches

Thailand is the place to go if you enjoy lively holidays. It has some of the most visually striking beaches in Southeast Asia and a focus on nightlife. While it also comes with quieter, more laid back beaches, the majority of tourists that head for Thailand are here for the buzz.

Partying in Pattaya
While a little bit sleazy, Pattaya is the oldest party beach in Thailand. It is a couple of hours south of Bangkok by highway and has more hotels and bars per capita than anywhere else in Thailand. The actual beach in Pattaya is not as nice as beaches at other prominent beach resorts, yet it is busy and the main focal point by day.
At night, Pattaya really comes into its own. If you are into drinking, eating and women of the night, this is the place to come. Prices here are invariably cheaper than at other popular beach resorts and there are literally hundreds of bars to choose from, from standard hole-in-the-wall watering holes, to expat pubs, go gos, and all out discos.
The liveliest part is Walking Street in the south at the end of the beach. It is traffic-free at nighttime and is wall to wall bars and girls. Although it has a reputation for being a bit unruly, Pattaya's bars are patrolled by tourist police and volunteers.

Lounging in Phuket
Thailand's second-most favorite party beach is Patong, located way down in the southwest of Thailand on the western side of Phuket. The beach and atmosphere in Phuket are a definite one-up from Pattaya, yet prices for accommodation, food, beer and women are steeper. Phuket has totally recovered from the devastation wrought by the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.
Patong Beach is a lot tidier than Pattaya Beach, plus it has some surf and a far prettier promenade. Soi Bangla, right behind the beach, is the main drinking area. It is literally steps from the sand and has every type of bar you could imagine. Head for the south side of the street for the cheaper, less in-yer-face bars and north for heavier action.
The gay area of Patong lies at the second street parallel to the beach amid the Paradise complex. Although virtually anything goes in Patong, it is on the whole a lot less sleazy than Pattaya, plus there are quality beaches to the north and south. In addition, and unlike Pattaya, Phuket has its own international airport with flights from Europe and all over Southeast Asia.

Getting Down in Samui
Thailand's third most happening beach is Chaweng Beach on the island of Koh Samui. It lies in the Gulf of Thailand and also comes with an airport, yet flights here are a lot more expensive than getting to Phuket as one airline, Bangkok Airways, owns the airport and has the monopoly.
Chaweng Beach lies on the east coast of Samui, as it is more commonly known. It is the island's largest beach and has the best spread of accommodation. Prices here are generally higher than at Patong and Pattaya, yet the beach is nicer and somewhat more exclusive. Everything is low-rise and restaurants open out onto the beach at night, while right behind the beach is a string of pumping bars.

Full Moon Fever in Phangnan
Another lively beach is that of Hat Rin on the island of Phangnan to the north of Samui. It gets crazy one night of the year, during the legendary Full Moon Party. Backpackers come from far and wide to drink and revel on the beach here although for the rest of the month it remains a lot quieter. Phangnan is a bit of a pain to get to as it doesn't have an airport. It is accessed by ferry from Samui.

Let's Learn Korean Traditional Instruments

I enjoyed watching Korean traditional music performance occasionally while traveling around Korea a lot! It's quite different compared to Malaysian traditional music but kinda similar to Chinese or Japanese. Among the instruments, gayageum and haegeum are my favorites.

One of the best performances that I watched was at Solleung Station where the artists belted their renditions of Beatles's using purely Gayageum. Amazing, right? I could stand with the crowds forever just listening to that performance but I couldn't!

If you are CNBLUE's Jung Yong Hwa and Park Shin Hye's fan, you must be familiar with gayageum as Park Shin Hye carries around that huge bulky instrument many times on the earlier episodes of Heart String / You've Fallen For Me drama. I 'm not interested much about the drama cause the plot and directing are just meh...*as if I'm a good director..haha* but I love it when they try to fuse traditional and pop rock music. The result is just marvellous! I'm quite skeptical initially but it sounds so natural. They blend just nice.

In one of the episodes, Park Shin Hye played the gayageum using her smartphone application and guess what I did next? I installed the app immediately.

I envy those people who could play by the ears!!

While web researching for gayageum and haegeum, I came across a Korean traditional instruments class for foreigners is available at National Gugak Center - http://www.gugak.go.kr/eng/education/clas_idx.jsp. The fee is only 30,000 won and it runs for a semester of 3 months. So cheap!!

Check out this song from Chuno OST with haegeum as the main instrument.

The need to study Korean

It's already mid of Ramadhan and what have I done lately?

Other than improving myself and doing the best in this holy month; I could not forget learning Korean. Every week, together with my Conversation Exchange partner we scored each other language weaknesses. I promise to meet up with Yong Soo 선생님 once a week to discuss what we have studied and what area we need to improve. It turned out to be fruitful! Just because I have a person to talk to so it made a whole lot of difference. Sometimes what I said will be quite weird to his ears cause I did direct translation from English..haha.

Of course I itched to join Korean classes!!  I have to calm myself down though for about 2 months or so before I can sweat out totally in Sogang University. Teehee..

When I told him that I applied for Sogang University, he was baffled. Why Sogang? He hailed from Korea University which is among the top three best universities in Korea. SKY - Seoul University, Korea University and Yonsei University. Here I am, all the while thinking that Seoul and Korea are the same university!! ^^; Apparently, they are not.

Korean parents feel proud if their children successfully enter those SKY universities regardless of major. My teacher studied French but after graduating he became a network engineer. How odd, right? He said, as long as you enter the best universities you could find great jobs from great companies, namely the giants alike - Samsung, Hyundai, LG.

This was his first time trying Malaysian food after three months staying here!

We discussed a lot about the academic expectation from Korean society's view which I am deeply curious since I set my foot in Seoul. I have met a lot of students in their winter school uniform coming home quite late almost every night, about 10 or 11pm while I was taking a night stroll. I wonder why Korean students are still in school at this hour? If I remember it right, I would have been on my bed already back in my school days.

By the way, I checked with Sogang University which level will I be placed when the semester starts in December. They gonna make an oral test to check my conversation level in mid November once the schedule is out. I told them that I have taken TOPIK exam but they told me that my Korean fluency will determine my level instead of the TOPIK score which has no oral test at all. Yikes!! I have to practise speaking a lot now.

On the other hand it's not difficult to leave the crowds behind, even during peak months, if you simply avoid some of the most popular destinations (e.g., Chiang Mai, islands and beaches). This is also the prime time for diving in terms of visibility and accessibility.

Dusit Zoo something for everyone

Having started its life as part of the Royal Dusit Garden Palace, much like a private garden to Rama V, today, the Dusit Zoo can be found on Rama V road which is within the same vicinity as the Parliament.

In the 1930's the gardens were converted into a zoological municipal garden and since the 1950's it has been under the care of the organization of the Zoological Park. This is the same organization that overlooks the up keep of the Chiang Mai and Chonburi zoos.
The zoo is spread out across 40 acres and a quarter of that land is covered in beautiful lakes that dot the landscape of the Dusit Zoo. The zoo offers tourists some unique features like all the world's gibbon species in one location. In addition, the zoo's bird island and variety of deer are a major crowd pleaser among those travelling with family.

The Dusit Zoo is perhaps the most popular zoo in Bangkok, because it was also the first zoo that Thailand established. The zoo has served as a shelter for over 1,000 odd species of animals for well over sixty years. The zoo is a completely functional park for animals and is equipped with its own hospital for the animals. This is in addition to the museum, a small educational centre where visitors could gather additional information on the species of animals on display.

Since the park is rather large for those on a limited time schedule it would be advisable to take a look at the map which gives an overall view of the zoo and then decide how the time could be spent. The zoo also offers a cafeteria and an activity area to keep even the youngest members of the family occupied.

For those who would just like to have a quick view of the sights that the zoo has to offer, could do so by hopping onto the tram that takes about 30 minutes to cover the whole zoo. If time is not a concern then a leisurely stroll would be sufficient a pace to cover the grounds of the zoo.

Visitors to Bangkok looking for a leisure stay over and considering options foraccommodation need look no further than one of the many Bangkok serviced apartments. One such as the Sathorn apartments would be an ideal option for those looking for flexibility and a location from which to explore the city. The Ascott Sathorn Bangkok offers facilities for both business and leisure travelers.
