Petaling Street, Kuala Lumpur

Petaling Street or known as Chinatown among tourists is the centre of Kuala Lumpur's original Chinatown. The street is also affectionately known as PS among locals.

Geographic Location
Petaling Street or known as Chinatown among tourists is the centre of Kuala Lumpur's original Chinatown. The street is also affectionately known as PS among locals. It is located at the Southeast of Central Market, bounded by Jalan Bandar, Jalan Petaling and Jalan Sultan.

Unique Features
To experience Petaling Street (Chinatown), you should go at night! It's a place that never sleeps. The jostling crowd and noise are part of the fun of visiting Petaling Street. Without these, it just wouldn't be right.

The street has actually been given a facelift. Gone are the uneven roads and broken pavements and the huge colourful umbrellas that protect the goods sold from wooden pushcarts. Petaling Street is now sheltered, with two large Chinese arches placed at both ends of the street to welcome visitors.

Petaling Street is a bustling market serving as a bargain hunter's paradise and one of the premier shopping areas in the city, which is distinct in oriental atmosphere. It is famous for its makeshift bazaars or stalls; selling "very reasonably" priced goods like wallets, handbags, t-shirts, watches, shoes as well as dresses, sunglasses, shoes, fabrics and souvenirs. Petaling Street is also known for its jewellery shops with their fascinating variety of fine jewellery items beautifully crafted in gold and set with priceless gemstones.

Historical Background
The original Chinese Town centred on Market Square. As the population grew, expansion was constrained by swamps, hills and the river. High Street, now known as Jalan Tun HS Lee, became increasingly popular, as it was higher than the rest of the town and therefore less prone to floods.

Kuala Lumpur was a typical "pioneer" town at the turn of the century, filled with a rough and tough population that was largely male. For entertainment, there was Chinese wayang (opera) or bangsawan (Malay theatre). The Chinese leaders provided for the community through associations, benevolent societies, temples and foundations. The wealthier and more ornate shophouses were built north of Jalan Cheng Lock, closer to the business centre.

Food
You are in food haven! Chinese food haven to be exact. There are many restaurants with a lot of delicious choices. Some of the restaurants here have been operating for generations! Patrons would normally be given a menu complete with pictures giving them a good indication of how their meal will look like.

The Hokkien Noodles at the corner of Hong Leong Bank is quite popular judging from the long queues of people waiting to place their order. Don't be disheartened. It is really worth the wait. Look out for Yook Woo Hin restaurant on Petaling Street. It is one the longest surviving family-run food places in KL.

Petaling Street is still a worthwhile place to visit for the food. If you wander into the side lanes, you will still be able to glimpse the old Chinatown, from the lane that sells funeral wreaths to the almost hidden wet market selling live poultry, seafood, and fresh vegetables.

Travel Advice
Bargaining here is an absolute must. Bargain hard! It's the ideal place to test your bargaining skills. Even in daytime you have great bargains. Petaling Street is not open for the traffic. It is a great place for locals to get some goods at bargain prices and certainly an eye-opening experience for tourists.

Singapore in 3D

Walk through a library, pick up a book and read it on-screen. Or, cheer on athletes with thousands of fans at the Youth Olympics without even being at the stadium.
Soon, Internet users will be able to walk through and interact with an online version of Singapore specially created for the computer screen.

The promise comes from an ambitious project to re-create not just the streets and buildings here but the experience of being in Singapore -- in an online 3D world. The Media Development Authority (MDA) is currently reviewing several proposals from the industry to build this virtual city, called Co-Space. Some of these proposals will be presented at an industry event this evening.

The realm could let users explore famous places, like Fort Canning, talk to Singaporeans who are also logged on, and be an online spectator during the Youth Olympics in 2011. It will allow people to chat in online forums and explore a 3D world like that in Second Life, the popular virtual domain that lets people 'walk' through streets with their avatars, or characters, and interact.

But unlike Second Life, the Singapore version will be based on reality, not fantasy. MDA deputy chief executive Michael Yap called it 'Google Maps meets Second Life.' Though the concept has been around since the early days of the Web, higher broadband speeds and faster computers churning out realistic 3D graphics have made such an online world possible now.

Fifty firms, from budding online-world developers to telecom operators have come forward since the MDA first sought proposals for the realm last month.

For example, they may be able to visit a virtual stadium, which will show video feeds of live events. The same concept is being pursued by several government agencies also involved in the Co-Space project.

The National Library Board, for example, is looking at a fully interactive library where people can not just walk through the shelves virtually. Insteads of just reading and typing on the Net now, you can also 'see' and maybe even 'touch' people online because everyone will have a character or avatar.

Hanoi citadel hosts tourist week

VietNamNet Birdge - A tourist week celebrating traditional trades and leading up to Hanoi’s 1,000th anniversary kicks off at the Thang Long Royal Citadel this on April 27. Located at 12 Nguyen Tri Phuong Street, Hanoi, organisers are working to bring back the cultural atmosphere of the old capital under traditional rooftops with traditional activities and an open-air fair.

To introduce traditional trades and talented craftsmen, the monument will be decorated with handicraft products such as artistic stones, pottery from Bat Trang village, paper lanterns and silk from the northern province of Ha Tay’s Van Phuc village. Visitors will get a chance to learn about solemn rituals of worship, as well as ancient Vietnamese houses including bamboo houses from northern Vietnam and houses from Hoi An’s Old Square.

Visitors are welcome to join in on a festival procession for ancestors of trades to kick off the opening day. Ceremonies will be full of cultural features such as a spiritual festival with a thousand candles and torches, a march by craftsmen around the Citadel and a gong performance from north-western ethnic groups along with drums from Doi Tam village in the northern province of Ha Nam.

The week will also launch a fine arts and handicrafts competition, under the theme: Hallmark in 1,000 years of Thang Long-Hanoi. Coinciding with the festival will be the launch of a new cultural centre celebrating handicrafts. The Hoa Lu Handicrafts Company will open the centre on April 28, entitled Hanoi – Pho Xua Nghe Cu (Hanoi – Old Streets and Crafts) at 31 Hang Gai street. The 500sq.m centre is traditionally designed to resemble the capital’s old streets. Here tourists can admire old photos of Hanoi, a city plan dating back to 1890 and discover the city’s typical cultural traits. The centre will sell a variety of souvenirs and handicrafts. The centre’s employees are all tour guides familiar with the old streets of Hanoi and handicrafts villages.

The week-long event will bring in tourism companies from the northern provinces of Thai Binh, Lao Cai, Bac Giang and Ha Tay advertising tours on the Hong (Red) River and trade villages on the outskirts of Hanoi. The event is being organised by the Hanoi Citadel Conservation Centre along with the Vietnam Association of Craft Villages.

Shopping in Phuket, Thailand

Explored a new shopping mall, Jungceylon, which was the name of Phuket back in 1511AD. Very modern architecture, displaying captivating junks which is their mascot and mall logo. The basement level offers a large array of local souvenirs, food stuff and massage services.

Hit Phuket Square instead. Now THIS is a place for the locals. It would be useful to know a few words in Thai like "how much" or "cheaper" to start bargaining for rock bottom prices for star buys.

Phuket Square was a compendium of hundreds of stalls of sorts, from clothes to shoes to bags to souvenirs. It was a shopper's haven, especially girls. It was a maze of streets, fully air-conditioned, spacious and comfortable. Only disadvantage: They don't speak much English.

Thailand is now top budget travel

Thailand is set to top the budget destination charts this year, with South Africa and Egypt in hot pursuit.

According to research by the Post Office, the cost of trips in the eurozone is increasing having been overtaken by the US which has become the seventh cheapest destination on the list of 16. Helen Warburton, Post Office head of travel claims that holidays "further afield will get excellent value for money".

She explained: "Elsewhere, sterling is up over eight per cent against the rand, making South Africa a good choice for UK tourists, and booming sales of Egyptian and Thai currency indicate that holidaymakers are already opting for trips where their pounds will stretch further.

"Thailand's appearance on the list will no doubt come as music to the ears of many backpacking travelers with whom the destination has become synonymous.

The Asian country held its new year Songkran celebrations earlier this month. The tourist resort of Patong on Phuket even upheld an alcohol sale ban to combat road accidents.

Laos - Must Visit Country

Laos is unique in that for a socialist country it has opened its doors to tourists. Since the latter part of the 1990s, Laos has been happy to welcome visitors from all over the globe. The reason behind their campaign to attract tourists, “Visit Laos” was because the economy was in a downward spiral and it was thought that tourism dollars would help to boost the economy. Lucky travelers can now experience the wonder of the sights and sounds of Laos.

Khone Phapheng is the largest waterfall that can be found in Southeast Asia. Located at Si Phan Don at its southern end, it is also considered home to Irrawadaddy dolphins, a rare species. The waterfall is a stunning sight and the presence of the dolphins makes it even more so. Day trips for viewing the dolphins often include a visit to Khone Phapheng.

Another important sight in Laos is Pha That Luang. Not only is this monument important for its relation to the Buddhist religion, it is also a monumnet to the sovereignty of Laos. Looking upon it from a distance, it gives the impression of a cluster of gilded missiles. In the early part of November, the temple is the location of one of Laos’ major festivals.

Pak Ou Caves can only be reached by boat and one can be caught at Ban Pak Ou. It is a spectacular sight as the setting is carved into a cliff made of limestone that faces the river. Inside the cave there are a plethora of images of Buddha in every style and shape, but many of them represent the classic standing Buddha, Luang Prabang. Tours are easily arranged by tour operators as well as many of Laos’ guest houses.

Other popular places to visit in Laos are the cities of Vientiane and Luang Prabang. Luang Prabang was given the distinction of being honored as a Unesco World Heritage city for its stunning, tranquil natural surroundings as well as its unique and beautiful architecture. This city is one of the top tourist destinations in Laos.

A tourists guide to Thai massage

The ancient art of therapeuticmassage was first developed in India some 2,500 years ago and brought to Thailand by Buddhist monks about 1,800 years back. Well known for itshealing properties, Thai traditional massage is developing into a global brand.

More and more westerners come here to be trained in this kneading art, with Wat Pho in Bangkok probably the most well-known place for receiving instruction. Chiang Mai in the north also offers a wealth of more or less accredited schools, teaching a softer northern style massage technique. There are courses however in Phuket, Pattaya and Samui.

Tourists and visitors to Thailand soon observe that the practice of mutual rubdowns is an everyday custom practiced openly and without embarrassment. Mothers kneading babies, teens their grandparents, vendors and motorcycle taxi drivers their colleagues’ tired shoulders or even easy chairs on the pavement offering instant foot massages for weary pedestrians.Thailand travel and tourist information

Then there is in-flight massage service on the national carrier and the mechanical massage chairs in airports or shopping malls. Put in a 10 baht coin and get three minutes of shaky back massage – just make sure you don’t fall asleep mid-massage.

But possibly the oddest place for a foreigner to be offered a massage is while standing in front of the urinal at an upmarket nightclub or restaurant. The toilet attendant will sneakily approach you from behind to place a hot towel on your neck and then start rubbing your shoulders.

Traditional Thai massage is for the most part practiced by women, but is also an important job for the blind. “Women can massage any clients regardless of age or gender, but male masseurs who can see may unintentionally be seduced by their visual perception,” says Aree Sanyaluck, massage teacher inChiang Mai. “Unsighted masseurs are able to concentrate better and have purer intentions.”

Anyone who tells of their Thai massage experience to those who aren't familiar with this art will likely get nudge-nudge quips about ‘special’ services. It is important to distinguish between massage with clothes on and with clothes off. Sadly, Thailand is better known for the latter, especially in some parts of Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket. But this is a misrepresentation.

Both kinds are social more than individual occasions with patrons chatting to each other through the partitioning or even to the masseuse who welcomes any distraction to lessen her boring routine. Visits to the flashy palaces offering more carnal pleasures as part of the massage routine are also usually done in groups, often to round off an evening of drinking and eating.

But back to the real tradition Thai massage, this is offered by skilled massagepersons in all tourist areas, such as Phuket, Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Krabi, Samui and Pattaya. They are very inexpensive and a two hour treatment will cover all 104 main energy points in the body using a kneading, yoga type positions, stretching and other techniques. Then there is the soothing oilmassage and of course foot massage, which is similar to reflexology. Guide tomassage in Phuket

Lately there has been a boom in the spa industry in Thailand, especially inChiang Mai, Bangkok and Phuket, where massage is central to many of the treatments on offer and although probably more expensive they are a very relaxing and pampering experience.

Night life in Singapore

The sun may dim but the fun doesn’t! As night falls, life begins in many quarters of Singapore. Whether you’re a party animal, a 24-hour foodie or just a night owl craving adventure around the clock, there are many sizzling surprises to keep your senses satiated till the wee hours of the morning. In fact, Singapore has the added advantage of being one of the safest countries in the world for you to hit the streets at night.

You don’t have to be a hard-partying hedonist to appreciate the colourful and exciting nightlife in Singapore. Sleep will never be further from your mind as you check out the ultra-chic bars, classy jazz lounges, or move to the groove at hip dance clubs. In line with efforts to improve the nightlife experience for all, there are smoking restrictions on entertainment outlets. Smoking is no longer allowed in all pubs, discos, karaoke bars and nightspots, unless within approved smoking rooms or smoking corners.

The food paradise too does not slumber – 24-hour coffee houses dot the island to satisfy the rumblings of the stomach with a range of local fare that boggles the mind. Teochew porridge, caramel bean curd, or just coffee and cake – you name it, we have it!

Even shoppers have no respite! Singapore is one of the few countries where late night shopping is not an exception. And if you’re bitten by the shopping bug in the wee hours of the morning, there’s always Mustafa Centre – Singapore’s only 24-hour shopping mall. In Singapore, there are no limits to having a great time!

Top 6 to do in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam

1. War Remnants Museum - 28 Vo Van Tan. One of the best museum’s in Vietnam. There is an outdoor display with aircraft, tanks, bombs and other military hardware, as well as an indoor photographic display. Photos were taken by war correspondents during the French and Vietnam Wars. Very moving and extremely powerful images, a must for all.

2. Reunification Palace – 106 Nguyen Du. Along with the War Remnants Museum, this is on of the best places to visit in HCMC. The former HQ of the South Vietnamese Government, the Palace was taken by the North in April 1975. Now you visit the site, have a free guided tour and check out a great video at the end. Worth the effort!

3. Ben Thanh Markets – Even if your not into shopping, Ben Thanh Markets are something else. Small isles, huge variety and tough sellers make for an action packed visit! If you are into shopping and bargaining this is heaven! In the evening the markets close and the night Food Market opens. Cheap and tasty food is a great way to end the day!

4. Giac Vien Pagoda – 247 Lac Long Quan. Founded some 200 years ago, this is one of my favorite pagoda’s to visit. Set in District 11, it’s a bit of an effort to get out there, but as they say “it’s not just about the destination; it’s also about the journey!” The easiest way there is to get a Motor Bike Taxi (Xe Om). The pagoda is open from 7am – 7pm.

5. Cafe Hopping – HCMC has grown in size and in population. Business is booming and the younger generation is making some good money. With that, there are now many trendy and funky cafes all around the District 1 area. A great way to spend an hour or two is simply by having a coffee and watching the passing people. You could seriously be in Sydney or Melbourne!

6. Cyclo Ride – A must for all visitors to HCMC! Jump in and go for an hour around the city. Best time for me is at 5pm’ish to enjoy the peak and finish at one of the riverside Hotels for a rooftop cocktail!

World's first Bats monitoring in Deer Cave, Sarawak

Prince Albert II of Monaco, who is on a three-day visit to Sarawak, the other Malaysian state on Borneo Island, today launched the world’s first digital remote-controlled bats monitoring system at Deer Cave, one of the many caves within the Mulu national park.

The RM800,000 (US$254,000) system, also known as the Mulu BatCam, utilises five remote controlled television cameras and infra-red lighting inside the cave. The system will be able to show spectacular details of the bat colonies inside. The system is developed by an Australian company and enables visitors to observe the bats regardless of the weather conditions.

The Deer Cave has the largest cave passage in the world and is the only known place in the world to have 12 different species of bats. The Mulu national park, which has the largest cave system in the world, is one of two World Heritage Sites in Malaysia.

Being Vegan in Korea

When I read Korea Herald today, I came across an article "Meat-free living in Korea: expat tips". Eureka!
Muslims are not vegan in particular but are religiously inclined to eat only permissible food according to Islam guidelines - Halal.

As many Muslim readers are concerned about food while traveling in Korea; this article will come in handy. Although, some might think twice of being vegan while traveling but for me; I have no problem at all. ^^ You can gobble meat as much as possible while you are in Malaysia, right?

A part of the article says : "People live happily throughout the country meat/animal-product-free. Mipa Lee, author of vegan blog Alien’s Day Out feels things are getting easier: “As more Koreans are making a conscious effort to eat less meat and more ‘well-being,’ organic, natural and slow foods, I think the demand for vegetarian fare is going up, and businesses are taking notice.”

Trang, Thailand - Thailand best unknown secret

While other islands around Thailand like Phuket and Koh Samui attract all the attention, the best out of the bunch is not known to most tourists.

After hearing from many Thai’s raving on about Trang and how the snorkeling was great, I thought I better go see what the fuss is all about and also heard great reviews in a few Thai forums. My wife and I went to a travel expo in Bangkok and booked a package which included 2 nights accommodation, including all meals and 2 days of snorkeling.

After a 1 hour flight we landed in Trang, it is located south of Phuket. Our resort picked us up from the airport and took us to a pier for our ferry to our resort which was on a small island. At the pier I couldn’t help but notice all the rubbish that was around, the place was filthy and I was starting to think this trip is not going to live up to the hype from my Thai friends. But after the ferry to our resort I was surprised that the rubbish had disappeared. Our bungalow was located about 10 meters from the beach which was nice.

After we dropped our bags off we went to have diner, where we were greeted with 6 dishes of seafood. The amount of food would of feed a family. After dinner which we didn’t come close to finishing we went back to the bungalow for some sleep to get ready for a full day of snorkeling.

In the 2 days of snorkeling, we had an amazing time, there was so much fish and they would eat rice right out of our hands. We also went to a place called the emerald cave, its a small opening in the side of a mountain which we swam as a group into (with life jackets). The cave was really dark, but if you looked down the water was light blue and was giving us a little light from the reflection from the sun. After about 30 meters in it just went pitch black for about 50 meters. Once we got to the end of the cave, the water lit up as there was an opening at the end of the cave.

Our guide told us there is a small beach surrounded by cliffs on the other side of the wall. But to get there we would have to swim under the wall for about 5 meters. I am a pretty strong swimmer and it was easy for me, but we had one guy who couldn’t swim at all. We had to make him hold his breath and 2 of us swam and pushed him under and through to the other side.

Once we all got through we were on a beach that was about 50 by 50 meters. It was a stunning place. I was told by our guide, that many years ago this is where pirates used to hide there valuables.
Once we got back out we went to many other spots to snorkel before we went back to our resort. It was an exhausting day.

After each tiring day we were greeted by a huge amount of seafood for dinner. I have to say this trip did live up to the hype. Trang is a beautiful place to visit, I would recommend it to anyone. If you like the sun, good food and snorkelingScience Articles, then Trang is the place to go.
