Animal Sports – Some Weird, Some Well-known

Sports are very fun and very healthy to be practiced. But besides sports for human, animal sports are very fun too!

Animals participate in many sports, some being legal and some being not so legal. Some of the sports that animals participate in include horse racing, bullfighting, dog sledding, cock fighting, pigeon racing, and greyhound racing just to name a few. There are also the famous dog shows where dogs compete in classes by breed; some believe this to be a sport while others feel it is more of a competition.

Bullfighting has been around since the prehistoric days, and is a very popular animal sport in Spain, where it is viewed as a dramatic ritual between the bull and the matador. Besides Spain, bullfighting is also popular in Portugal, Mexico, Peru, Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, France, and is also quite popular in the state of California. Out of all of the bullrings in the world, Mexico City is home to the largest one of them all, which seats 55,000 spectators.

Dogsledding became an organized animal sport in Alaska in 1908, and has been increasing in popularity ever since. In dog sledding, a team of dogs pulls a sled that carries the driver, who is sometimes referred to as the “musher.” There are different types of dog sled races, but the teams of dogs are made up of three, six or twelve dogs. Some races are short and are considered to be sprint races, while others are considered long-range races and can cover a course consisting of 200 to 1000 miles.

As with many animal sports, there are those who believe that cock fighting should be banned due to animal cruelty. However, in some cultures cock fighting is legal and draws huge crowds, such as in Guam, Peru, Belgium, Italy, Haiti, Spain, France, Mexico, Malaysia, Puerto Rico, and the Phillipines, which have arenas built especially for cock fighting. The game birds that are used in cock fighting are not ordinary farm chickens, they are a special breed of aggressive chicken that is raised and trained to be fighters. While cock fighting may be an accepted animal sport in some countries, there are numerous places where cock fighting, and even just attending a cockfight as a spectator, is considered a felony. Many of these laws have been enacted due not only to animal cruelty issues, but also because of the gambling that is associated with cock fighting.

Pigeon racing is another animal sport that has quite a fan base. Across the United States there are over 700 different clubs catering to those who enjoy the sport of pigeon racing. Essentially, during a race, the birds are released from a location that is far from there home, and the first pigeon to make it back is the winner. The races cover much territory, and races can have the pigeons flying 100 to 600 miles as they make their way home.

There are also animal sports that are less known about like those that occur at county fairs; frog jumping contests, pig races, turtle races and the like can all be considered animal sports as they have a number of animal participants competing against one another.

An Introduction To Trampolines - recreational, and competitive

Trampolines are a fun way to keep fit, and can be used to improve your health through cardiovascular exercise. They are used for a wide range of athletic and recreational purposes.

Trampolines are used by children and adults alike, and are very popular. The benefits of owning one are endless.

The two types of trampolines are recreational, and competitive. Recreational trampolines aren't constructed as sturdily as competitive trampolines, and their springs aren't as strong. Recreational trampolines come in both outdoor as well as indoor varieties, and are available in various shapes and sizes.

The most common shapes are round, square, and rectangular. Generally, round trampolines are ideal for fun and recreational use, while the rectangular trampolines are best for serious bouncers.

While trampolines are a lot of fun, they can also be unsafe, and the majority of trampoline-related injuries happen on home trampolines. Therefore children or adults should never attempt to perform stunts or tricks without taking proper training first.
Some of the following tips will help to avoid accidents:

• It is best to allow only one person on the trampoline at a time. This ensures there are no collisions or users being bounced in an unexpected direction.

• Make sure you use quality safety pads to cover the spring and the frame of the trampoline. This will prevent severe impact injuries.

• Use crash mats on the areas around the trampoline to help break the fall of anyone who may bounce off onto the ground.

• For maximum safety, purchase a safety net to prevent users from bouncing off the edge of the trampoline. These nets are well worth the investment

When purchasing a trampoline look out for the safety features. Be sure to check the quality of the springs, frames, and jumping mats. Always buy top quality frame pads for the best protection.

If you are purchasing an outdoor trampoline, look for one that is designed to be left outside all year round. The frame should be made of heavy duty galvanized steel to protect it from the weather. This way, your investment will last for many years to come.

At the end of the day you get what you pay for, therefore budget trampolines are of lower quality, hence the price.

4 Epic Days Of Powder Skiing

Grab your skis and get out here!

Those seven words were the start of the most epic adventure of my life. They came in the form of a phone call from a remote lodge in Eastern British Columbia.

“Man you will not believe what the last 2 days were like. It hasn’t stopped snowing here for 42 hours. Dude it is almost waist deep. We signed up for another 4 days. There is one spot left. Grab your skis and get out here.

“I am in” I hastily declared not quite sure how I was going to get away from work.

When it is waist deep I can always find a reason for getting out of work. I was buzzing. It has been a long time since I have gone skiing in the back country. I quickly threw a couple changes of clothes into my pack, gloves, helmet, goggles, in also. Transferred some money around and I was on my way to the adventure of a lifetime, literally.

I was going to Golden BC to enjoy some great snowcat skiing about 80 north of the small mountain community. Some guys I knew from Calgary were up on a 3 day tour at Chatter Creek and called me after their second day in waist deep powder. The excitement in their voice (and probably a bit of alcohol as well) had me vibrating within seconds of hearing the words “waist deep”.

Of course with a lot of snow falling in the past several days the mountain pass between Golden and neighboring Revelstoke was treacherous to say the least. Traffic had been getting through intermittently between closures for avalanche control.

Getting into Golden was a relief since the helicopter flight to the lodge was in just under an hour. I had just enough time to stop at 7-11 for gum and other junk food, get to the airport, sign a waiver and board the chopper.

The 22 minute flight was something else. We skirted up the valley from Golden with the Selkirks on the left and the Rockies on the right. A final quick jump over the Kitchen Range and we were into the Chatter Creek Drainage. I could see the blue roofing of the lodge appear like a sapphire in the green and white of the surrounding terrain.

The first night of the trip was a blur of food, booze and faces. 35 other people with the same crazed look of powder that I had. It was hard to get to sleep the first night but before long I was woke up by my watch. First thing was to look out the window to see how much new; 22cm on top of the 96 cm that fell in the last 4 days.

The morning continued with breakfast at 7:30 followed by a safety briefing about the snowcats and more importantly avalanche safety and the use of transceivers. This was followed by boarding the cats for a 15 minute ride to the East Ridge.

Running almost east to west for 7 km, the East Ridge is 2200 vertical feet of north facing trees and south facing cut blocks.

The snowcat stopped at the top of a run called Bad Boys. The top 1/3 of the run in the alpine and continued down through old growth spruce and larch. Bad Boys certainly looked great. Our group of 12 got out, the cat roared off to the bottom to wait for us. We all got geared up and followed our guide to where we would drop in. The guide said to stay center and stop at the tree line. With that he turned and disappeared into a cloud of white.

I sliced my way past a couple of my buddies and dropped in. The first turn took me by surprise. It was like there was no bottom. By turn three I was able to get a glimpse of where I was and pointed to where I needed to go. With that the most epic 4 days of powder skiing began.

Japanese Samurai Swords Buying Guide

When it comes to samurai swords, there is quite a bit of terminology for the new collector to understand. But we want to make it easy for anyone to find a good quality samurai sword that will last a lifetime, no matter if you’re looking for one of the very sought after Paul Chen Katana swords for battle or just a quality sword to hang over the mantle.

The first thing to consider for your new samurai sword is the type and quality of the blade. If you’re looking for a you want to be sure and choose a full tang blade, which all of our authentic samurai swords feature as well as all of our battle ready swords. The term “full tang” means that the blade and the part of the sword under the Tsuka (handle) is one long piece of steel. If you get a sword that is not full tang then you’re basically buying it to hang on the wall and nothing more.

The next thing to consider when choosing a sword is the type of steel that the blade is made of. There are basically 3 types of steel, 420 J2 (Stainless steel), High Carbon, and Folded steel. If you are looking for a battle ready sword you’ll want to stay away from the 420 J2 Stainless. High carbon steel is very high quality steel; however folded steel is the strongest. Actually it’s not that the folded steel is a different type of steel, but how the blade is forged.

A folded steel blade is typically made from high carbon steel. The difference is that a folded steel blade is just like it says; the steel is folded over and over again until the smith believes that it is adequate.

Some people say that a good high carbon steel blade can be just as strong as a folded steel blade. The smiths for the Thaitsuki Nihonto Swords claim to have mastered a form of forging high carbon steel blades that is just as strong if not stronger than many of the folded steel blades.

When choosing a sword samurai sword there are basically 3 different styles to consider, the katana sword, the Wakizashi sword and the Tanto sword. The Japanese Katana Sword is the most popular among collectors and martial arts students alike.

The katana sword was the first and is still the most popular of all samurai swords. The blade is typically 29” long with an overall length around 40”

The Wakizashi sword is the shorter companion blade of the katana sword. We first see the Wakizashi sword during the Muromachi period (1568-1603). The Wakizashi was about 18” long and only allowed to be carried by a samurai. Carrying both the katana and the Wakizashi was popular for the next few hundred years.

The smallest samurai sword would be the tanto sword or dagger. Originally tanto swords were 12” in length or less but it’s not out of the ordinary to come across a Tanto that is 15” long.

Samurai sword collecting is a very popular past time for many Americans. Something that is becoming even more popular is martial arts that make use of samurai sword for fighting and cutting exercises. The most popular and affordable authentic samurai swords are the Paul Chen Swords. You can find a decent Paul Chen Practical Katana Sword for under $200. However for less than a hundred more you can get yourself a Paul Chen Practical Plus Katana. If you’re looking for something a little more pricy the Paul Chen Bushido Katana or the Orchid Katana will last a lifetime and can take quite a beating. The Orchid and Bushido also come in a Wakizashi and Tanto.

In conclusion, the most important thing when buying your sword is that you know what kind of blade you're getting. If you want a functional sword be sure that you're not getting one that's only made to hang on the wall. If it's not clearly stated on the page for the sword, don't hesitate to contact the store to ask any questions you might have.

Sportsmen And Naturalists Flock To Hunting And Fishing Lodges

Picture yourself curled up on an overstuffed couch, reading one of your favorite books in front of a roaring fire, built in a classic stone fireplace. The smell of wood sap is in the air, and if you turn your head you can see out the window onto a magnificent vista of nature in its most pristine element. There are no sirens, no horns, no street lights, no traffic. The only sounds are those common to the outdoors, a squirrel chattering, birds chirping, maybe even the haunting call of a loon on a nearby lake.

If this scene appeals to you, you can probably understand the growing popularity of hunting and fishing lodges.

Hunting and fishing lodges were once the sole indulgence of rich industrialists who through their ventures or capital could afford to have a small getaway tucked into some remote corner of wilderness, far from the hustle and bustle of the city, and pursue their manly inclinations.

The coming of age of the richest generation ever and the unprecedented accessibility via logging roads and other ventures to the great outdoors has now made it possible for almost anybody to enjoy their own hunting or fishing lodge in their version of paradise. Lakeside, mountainside, by rivers or streams, lodges are being built as getaways from life’s drudging routine by people in all walks of life.

The increased popularity of the lodge is no doubt driven by a renewed interest in the natural world. People can come into closer communion with the forest and yet still retain a measure of comfort within the walls of their small lodge. Everything tends to be different in this sort of environment, and owners of lodges will often find they are much better acquainted with their fellow nature lovers with lodges or farms nearby than they are with the people in their own neighborhoods back home. Something about leaving the city seems to trigger a response within the soul that causes us to lose our fears and embrace the unfamiliar.

Best of all, lodges are appealing to those who would not even consider themselves sportspersons. If you choose to try your hand at a fishing rod or at firing a gun, there is no better place to do it. But for some, the lodge will remain purely a place to sit down, relax, and finish the book that you have been trying to read for months, away from the distractions of everyday life.

How can I become a wild boar hunter?

Ever since very distant times, people have hunted boars for both need and pleasure, but the custom has remarkably kept its meanings and quintessence all the way through. Although today hunting is done very differently compared to the times when it was firstly practices, in Persia, people hunting hogs are just as enthusiastic about it.

If anyone decides to give this hunting variety a shot, then he should know that the risks of unpleasant incidents are higher than in the case of other hunting types, but also that the satisfaction could make the risks seem far too unimportant to make a difference.

Although many consider it a perilous and old-fashioned hunting variety, wild boar hunting has it fair share of fanatics across the world. Although at a first glance it may seem no different than other hunting types that require a great deal of waiting, this particular sport is one of the reasons for which the word complexity was invented.

A clear rule must be set from the very beginning: never will you approach a boar in a way that will put your safety into peril. To emphasize this, you should know that hogs tend to become aggressive when threatened, especially when their cubs (or piglets) are around, although they are quite tranquil in general. These creatures are well-known for their fighting spirit, being fierce and fearless when confronting an enemy. Therefore, avoid becoming that enemy by setting an appropriate distance between you and the boar, or try to establish a cover spot far from a certain trail that boars frequent. This implies, studying their routes, either by making notes as you watch their habits for a reasonable period of time or by asking landowners and locals about this.

In fact, preparation plays a big part in the hunting game, perhaps the most important one of them all. Knowing the places where boars come often, either to feed, play or mate is vital to any hunting experience. This can be easily overcome by having a more experienced boar hunter lead you to the best places in the area. For a beginner hunter, every little part of the forest is much the same, with no particularities, but a skilled hunter can easily predict the boars’ routines just by glancing at the most apparently unimportant signs.

Foot signs are a clue to whether a wild boar has been in a specific place recently or the signs are older. Also, remember that boars usually frequent places easy to get to, away from any bedding areas and, if possible, right next to trails and flounders; routine is a particularity of their moving habits, so if you find a good place to lay your bait don’t move, because chances are another boar will come shortly.

This takes us to the least enjoyable part of boar hunting: preparing and placing the bait. Made out of corn, the bait will lure hogs towards a deep whole you’ve dug beforehand. With their exceptional smelling qualities, hogs will not resist the chance of a free meal even if far away. Often they will gather in great numbers, but this is not desirable as they will finish all the food before you can get the chance to shoot. Furthermore, remember to stay as far as possible to the baiting place (as human scent will most likely be detected by the creatures and it will freak them out), while still having a comfortable range shot ahead.

All in all, wild boar hunting is an old hunting practice, but it’s surprising everyone with its staying power over time. Although it takes much courage and patience, people all over love hunting hogs wherever and whenever possible. If you plan on being one of them arm yourself with more than firepower and let the legend of boar hunting live on.

5 Useful Tips On Trout Fishing

For brook trout, the native habitat includes the territory from Labrador westward to the Saskatchewan, while the rainbow trout is a native of the Pacific slope from Alaska to California.

On the other hand, brown trout has found its way into the waters of every state in the United States except Florida, Arkansas, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Dakota, Oklahoma, and Texas. It has been reported in the waters of some of these states, but according to conservation officials, no authentic reports have been received. It is also found in many parts of Canada.

In trout fishing, there are some factors that need to be considered in order to have a successful catch.

1. For trout fishing, the leader should not be greased. It will not sink far enough to cause any difficulty when picking the line and lure from the water, but if it is allowed to float; it will cast a shadow on the bottom of the stream which may scare the trout.

2. The trout is one of the fishes that are usually secured through the use of the dry fly. For trout, the current as well as the pools should be fished. It may sometimes be a bit difficult to keep the fly from sinking or dragging because of the various conditions of the current, but this is a matter that the angler will have to figure out for himself.

3. It is not good practice when fishing for trout to fish directly upstream so the flies, line, and leader will float directly over fish. The fisherman should make the cast from one side of the stream so the fly will only float over the fish.

4. It is important to make the first cast the best. A feeding trout will usually strike the first lure presented if it is cast so that it will float over his private domain. The angler should never fail to fish the lower end of the pool first even if the trout are rising in the middle or upper end.

5. Trout are sometimes very moody or selective and will try the patience of any angler; hence, possibly a fly with less hackle will do the trick or it may be necessary to use a spent-wing fly or a fan wing.

Indeed, catching trout fishes can be lots of fun. The anglers just have to remember these tips in order to have a happy catch.

A Basic Overview of Kayaks and Kayaking

kayak, kayaks, sports, water, rapids, bay, hunting boat, or Kayaking is growing in popularity. It is a sport with a lot of variations, which are covered below in this article.

A Basic Overview of Kayaks and Kayaking

At its core, kayaking is simply a method of propelling oneself through a body of water by using ones own power. A paddle is used to do this with the paddle usually having two curved portions on each side to allow for a back and forth action unlike canoeing. This definition, however, fails in many ways since there are extremely different types of kayaking. Let’s take a look.

Kayak roughly means hunting boat. It has been used throughout history by people living on shores to pursue food in the ocean. The indigenous people in the Arctic are believed to have been the first kayakers using wood frames covered by animal skins. In modern times, kayaking refers to a much broader scope of activities. That being said, the basic boat remains the same.

Kayaks are long, thin and usually one person boats. They come in different forms and styles, which are primarily adapted to a particular style of kayaking. Sea kayaks are very long and thin, which helps them glide easily through the water. Kayaks designed for running challenging river rapids, on the other hand, are short to facilitate maneuverability and the opportunity to roll to upright oneself after being flipped upside down.

While almost all kayaks are designed to have the person sit down in them, a certain class allows the person to site on a flat indention on the top of the kayak. Obviously, this type of kayaking is typically done on smooth surfaces such as lakes.

As these designs seem to suggest, kayaking comes in a lot of forms. Some people love to take them out on a cruise around a bay in Alaska or any ocean areas. Other kayaking enthusiasts prefer to shoot the rapids of extreme rivers and will travel all over the world to do so.

Kayaking is a huge adrenaline rush or a relaxing way to see sites up close and personal. You just have to make your choice, get out there and go.

World Wide Appeal - Pocket Bike Racing

Pocket bike racing is a sport that continues to grow in appeal all across the world. While Japan is credited with the first large scale cultural interest and organization of pocket bike racing, this is no longer just a Japanese or Asian phenomenon. Pocket bike racing has increased dramatically in popularity through out the world. While the United States and Australia are two of the most noted places where this sport is growing rapidly, don’t forget Europe!

Switzerland actually holds a championship that is gaining international recognition. Geographically close to Italy, where almost all of the highest quality racing pocket bikes are manufactured now, the Swiss Pocket bike Championship first appeared in 1996. This happened when a pocket bike club (the Gruyere Pocket Bike Club, to be precise) decided to compete against all Swiss pocket bike riders who showed. It has been growing ever since and now the Swiss Championship has grown to become one of the biggest in the world, when compared to the nation's size.

Commonly the competition will now have over 120 competitors, with a few of them coming even from nearby countries like France, Austria and Liechtenstein. There are between 8 to 11 races on 8 to 11 different tracks that are counted for the championship, meaning there are anywhere from 64-121 races. Several categories are awarded based on age and gender of the pilots and on the type of pocket bike (junior, stock or racing prepared).

The growth of this sport in Switzerland and Europe is a continued reflection of worldwide trends. Pocket bike racing has never been more popular in the United States than it is now, and there are no signs of it diminishing. New race circuits, pocket bike stores, and online forums pop up every year, and the devout group of pocket bike junkies grows with that number. Australia has a respectable series of races and a continued growth in the sport, and it is not like pocket bike racing just disappeared in Japan. The sport is still going strong.

The trend continues in pocket bike racing’s rising popularity, and seems to continue unabated. What was once seemingly a strange Japanese sideshow has proven itself to be far more, and with each new race, only further re-enforces its current respect.
